Comedy is personal, When a stand up falls down on stage it hurts the audience as much. There's no pleasure in that. They call it The Marmite Syndrome. What they mean is there's no middle ground. Either you love the stuff or you hate it. Same with comedians, Laugh till you drop, or drop till you laugh.
Adam Sandler has always been a contender. Sexy and fun for some. Sandpaper for others. His humour is puerile and cruel, often at the same time. When he plays straight he exposes a quality of acting that cannot be knocked.
That's how he is here, playing a jeweller in New York, wheeling and dealing like the rest, surrounded by small men dressed as gangsters. He has a shop, an office, a hangout. He doesn't seem to do much except think of ways to rip off his friends and gamble. He has a problem there. Pro basketball hooks him in every time and there's money involved - too much.
He plays a shit. His colleagues are no better. Do you care? Do you ask yourself, what am I doing here, why am I watching this? The answer is more stupid than the question and the answer is, "Word on the street has a smiley face. "
What street is that? Not mine.
